I’m planning to create an extra interactive classroom activity for all the Read about Australia books – eventually.
So far we have an activity for Capital Cities of Australia and another for Outback Australia.
Now this one is for Amazing Animals of Australia. It’s designed for reading groups, conversation groups or classroom use….post reading, and perhaps after doing the worksheets which review the new information and vocabulary.
How the activity works
It’s the old ‘find the person with the other half of your sentence’ activity. nothing original, but still a great way to get learners out of their chairs speaking to a different person, then ‘presenting’ in a very low-key way to the whole class.
There are sentence halves and matching pictures to cut up and laminate. You don’t need to use them all, as there are just 7 per page (20 animals in total). If you want bigger animal pictures, copy onto A3.
Half the learners get a ‘sentence beginning’ and half get a ‘sentence end’. They must walk around and find their ‘match’.
Then together they select the correct picture for their sentence.
That’s not so easy, because so many marsupials are similar – so they can check against the book or against the answer pages.
Each pair can then present their animal to the group and read out their sentence.
(If you have an odd number of students, that extra person can be given the answer pages and be given the Task Manager role for a while.)
Extending the activity
If you’d like to go a little further with this, the pairs can each add one extra piece of information, based on their reading or something they know or have researched.
