New ESL reading series supports adult migrants to learn about Australia
The Book Next Door announces the launch of Read about Australia, a new EAL/ESL reading series designed specifically for adult and young adult migrant English learners seeking to understand their new country. The first four books in the series are now available.
Filling a critical gap
The series was developed after requests from libraries for easy-read non-fiction with Australian content for their ESL/EAL sections. At the same time, teachers of adult migrants observed significant gaps in learners’ knowledge about Australia. Many could not locate Canberra on a map, did not understand the red and yellow beach flags, or had never ventured beyond the city limits—yet all were eager to learn more about their new home.
Supporting settlement and language learning
The “Read about Australia” books support settlement, citizenship preparation, and language learning, while also serving as engaging reads for visiting international students. Written at an elementary level (EAL 2, or CEFR A1-A2), the books are perfect for post-beginners, accessible for strong beginners, and offer quick, confidence-building reads for intermediate learners.
Each book features a spacious layout to support learners still adjusting to English script and reading direction. Readers have access to free online audio recordings and downloadable worksheets to extend the learning experience.
Versatile use
The books work equally well for personal borrowing, book groups, conversation sessions, and classroom settings. The aim is to give learners that motivating experience of reading success, as well as engaging settlement and safety information.
